Candolim, Baga and Anjuna are three beach towns on the same stretch of the North Goa coast, all within about 10 km of each other. Each suits a different kind of trip. Candolim is the calmest of the three, with a long beach and the pubs a short ride away rather than on your doorstep. Baga is the nightlife centre, with the clubs and late-night restaurants on the strip itself. Anjuna is known for its flea market, cliffside cafes and music scene. Pick the one whose evenings you want.

The towns are close enough that the choice is low-stakes. Baga is about 6 km from Candolim and Vagator, the beach next to Anjuna, about 10 km. goSTOPS has a property in Candolim, one in Baga and one in Vagator, so whichever town you pick, there is a place to stay nearby.

Key takeaways

  • Candolim offers a calmer home base with Baga’s nightlife within easy reach: goSTOPS Plus Goa Candolim is located about a kilometre from Candolim beach, with plenty of pubs nearby for the evenings.
  • Baga is North Goa’s nightlife centre, the one to book when the clubs and late nights are the reason for the trip.
  • Anjuna runs on its market-and-music scene, with a freer, more bohemian energy than Candolim or Baga.
  • goSTOPS has options across the North Goa map: Candolim, Baga, Vagator near Anjuna, and Panaji for anyone who wants the city instead.

What is Candolim like to stay in?

Candolim is the calmest of the three towns, and a quieter alternative to Baga and Calangute next door. The beach is long, the shacks are spread out rather than packed together, and the town behind it moves at a walking pace. You sleep somewhere quiet and choose when you want the party scene.

Staying in Candolim still gives you a nightlife option. Cohiba, Pousada by the Beach, Fisherman’s Cove, Mikey’s Place and Palms & Sands are all within easy reach of the property. Baga’s strip, with its clubs and late-night restaurants, is about 6 km up the coast from Candolim. That is close enough for a night out and far enough that the night ends when you decide it does.

goSTOPS Plus Goa Candolim is the place to stay here. It is located about a kilometre from the beach and holds 154 beds across dorms and private rooms. Every dorm has a balcony, the pool is open 8 am to 8 pm, and dorm beds are around Rs 400 a night.

Good to know: Candolim puts you closest to Aguada Fort and the Museum of Goa, and Panaji is about 7 km from Candolim when a city evening appeals.

What is Baga like to stay in?

Baga is the reason many people come to North Goa at all. The Tito’s lane strip, the clubs, the late-night restaurants and the crowd that fills them make it the highest-energy address on this coastline. If that is your trip, staying anywhere else adds a commute to every night.

The daytime is busy too, with a compact beach, water sports running and shacks shoulder to shoulder. Baga suits travellers who want the trip to feel like an event from breakfast onwards.

goSTOPS Goa Baga is the place to stay here, on Baga-Arpora Beach Road and within walking distance of the beach. It runs 10-bed mixed AC dorms and Deluxe Private AC Rooms with balconies, and has a home theatre, indoor games and lockers. Parasailing, wakeboarding, windsurfing and jet skiing all operate nearby.

What is Anjuna like to stay in?

Anjuna is the scene that built North Goa’s reputation. The draws are the Wednesday flea market (open from about October to April, closed for the monsoon), the cliffside cafes and the music crowd. It has a freer, more bohemian energy than Candolim or Baga, and its regulars would call that exactly the point. Days revolve around the market, the coves and the cafes. Nights revolve around the live music and the parties, which move between venues from week to week.

goSTOPS’ nearest property to Anjuna is goSTOPS PLUS Goa Vagator, one beach north and about 10 km from Candolim. It sits close to Vagator Beach and Chapora Fort, and has a swimming pool, an in-house cafe, a garden and an amphitheatre. Dorms run 8, 12 and 16 beds in mixed AC rooms, with an 8-bed female AC dorm and both standard and deluxe private rooms. For an Anjuna-centred trip, Vagator works as the base next door.

How far apart are the three towns?

They are close enough that no choice locks you in. From Candolim, Baga is about 6 km, Vagator about 10 km and Panaji about 7 km. A scooter or a cab moves you between any two of them, so the real question is not which town you will visit. It is which one you want to spend your evenings in.

PanajiThe city option, about 7 km from CandolimgoSTOPS Goa, Panaji PLUS6 and 8-bed mixed dorms, 6-bed female-only dorm, private rooms, Fontainhas quarter
Tip: if your group cannot agree, Candolim is the compromise that asks the least of everyone: the quiet sleepers get their nights, and Baga’s nightlife strip is one short ride away for everyone else. Group bookings help the budget too: any group of four or more gets 15% off, and groups of more than seven get 20% off.

Which North Goa town should you book?

The beaches will fill your days in any of these towns, so book by your evenings.

Candolim suits travellers who want to end the day somewhere unhurried: couples, small groups, anyone treating Goa as a recovery trip rather than a festival. Baga suits the trip where the nightlife is the itinerary. Anjuna suits the market-and-music crowd, with Vagator as its practical base.

If you realise the beach is not actually the point, Panaji is the fourth answer. goSTOPS Goa, Panaji PLUS puts you in the Fontainhas quarter, among the Portuguese-era streets and cafes, with Old Goa a short drive away. It runs 6 and 8-bed mixed AC dorms, a 6-bed female-only dorm and private rooms.

Choosing your North Goa base

Book the town whose evenings you want. Candolim suits a calm base with the pubs a short ride away, and Baga suits a trip where the clubs are the reason for coming. Anjuna is for the market and the cafes, and Panaji is there if the beach turns out not to be the point. Whichever you choose, the others are a scooter ride away.

goSTOPS has a property in all four: goSTOPS Plus Goa Candolim, goSTOPS Goa Baga, goSTOPS PLUS Goa Vagator next to Anjuna, and goSTOPS Goa, Panaji PLUS. Details of all four are at goSTOPS Goa.
