Mumbai to Goa is one of India’s most travelled routes. It runs down the Konkan coast by train, overnight by bus, or in an hour and a half by air. The usual trip is three nights, out on a Thursday or Friday and back on a Sunday or Monday, with the days between on a North Goa beach. The Goa trip cost from Mumbai depends on which journey you pick and where you sleep. The second of those is the part a hostel changes most.

goSTOPS Plus Goa Candolim is about a kilometre from Candolim beach, with dorm beds from around Rs 400 a night. Three nights on a dorm bed is around Rs 1,200. The breakdown that follows works through the journey, the stay and the rest. The figures that are known are stated, and the ones that depend on you are left to you.

Key takeaways

  • The train from Mumbai to Goa takes 10 to 12 hours and costs around Rs 800 in sleeper class or around Rs 1,500 in 3AC, each way.
  • An overnight bus takes 12 to 14 hours. A seat is roughly Rs 600 to Rs 1,800 and a sleeper berth Rs 1,500 to Rs 4,000, depending on demand.
  • Three nights on a dorm bed at goSTOPS Plus Goa Candolim is around Rs 1,200, with groups of four or more getting 15% off.
  • With a sleeper train each way and a dorm bed, the journey and the stay come to around Rs 2,800. Food, a scooter and the beach sit on top of that.

How does the Goa trip cost from Mumbai break down by journey?

The train is the route down the coast. The Konkan Railway runs down the coast through tunnels and over river bridges. The journey takes 10 to 12 hours, so an overnight train lands you in Goa in the morning. Sleeper class is around Rs 800 each way, 3AC around Rs 1,500 and 2AC around Rs 1,900. The trains stop at Madgaon and Thivim among others, and Thivim is the closer station to Candolim.

The bus is the other overnight option, taking 12 to 14 hours. An AC seat or semi-sleeper runs roughly Rs 600 to Rs 1,800, and a sleeper berth Rs 1,500 to Rs 4,000. The higher end of each range comes on long weekends and festival dates, when services sell out early. Buses drop at Panaji, Mapusa and Madgaon.

The flight is about an hour and a half, and the fare moves too much with the date to put a figure on it here. Goa has two airports, Manohar at Mopa about 33 km from Candolim by road and Dabolim about 38 km, so check which one the fare lands at.

Good to know: on a three-night trip, the journey each way is where the cost spread is widest. Two sleeper train tickets come to around Rs 1,600 for the round trip, two 3AC tickets around Rs 3,000, and a flight both ways several times that.

What does the stay cost for three nights?

The stay is the steadiest part of the Goa trip cost from Mumbai. A dorm bed at goSTOPS Plus Goa Candolim starts around Rs 400 a night, so three nights is around Rs 1,200. The dorms are 6 and 8-bed mixed AC rooms with balconies and ensuite bathrooms, plus a 6-bed female-only dorm. Every bunk has a privacy curtain, a plug point and an individual fan. Lockers are in the room and the front desk is staffed 24 hours.

For two people who want the room to themselves, the private rooms are priced by date on the property page, and the rate splits two ways. For four or more travelling together, the group discount is 15% off, and for more than seven it is 20% off. That takes four dorm beds for three nights from around Rs 4,800 to around Rs 4,080.

Who is travellingStay for three nightsWhat it costs
One personA dorm bedAround Rs 1,200
Two peopleA private roomRate for your dates, split two ways
Four peopleFour dorm beds with 15% offAround Rs 4,080, or Rs 1,020 each
Eight peopleEight dorm beds with 20% offAround Rs 7,680, or Rs 960 each

Tip: book the beds for a group as one booking rather than four separate ones. The discount applies to the group booking, and it is also how four friends end up in the same dorm rather than spread across the property.

What does the rest of the trip cost?

The rest is yours to set, and it varies more than the journey or the stay. A scooter is the usual way around North Goa, and the beach towns are close together. Food runs from the shacks on the sand to the restaurants in Candolim and the pubs within easy reach of the property. The spread between a budget day and an expensive one is wide.

The transfer from the station or airport depends on which one you arrive at. Thivim is the nearest station to Candolim and Mopa the nearer airport, and a prepaid taxi or an app cab covers either. From the property, the beach is about a kilometre and Baga’s strip about 6 km, so the daily movement is short.

Why goSTOPS Plus Goa Candolim: about a kilometre from Candolim beach, with dorm beds from around Rs 400 a night and private rooms for two, balconies on every dorm, a pool open 8 am to 8 pm, a 24/7 front desk for whatever hour the train or bus arrives, and group discounts of 15% for four or more and 20% for more than seven.

What does the whole trip add up to?

For one person taking the sleeper train both ways and a dorm bed for three nights, the journey and the stay come to around Rs 2,800. With 3AC instead, around Rs 4,200. With a sleeper bus at the lower end of its range, around Rs 4,200 as well. On top of that comes whatever you spend on food, the scooter and the evenings, which is the part no breakdown can set for you.

For a group of four on the sleeper train with the dorm discount, the journey and the stay are around Rs 2,620 each. That is the figure that makes a three-night Goa trip from Mumbai something to do more than once a year.

Three nights, costed

A Goa trip cost from Mumbai starts with the journey, around Rs 800 each way by sleeper train or Rs 1,500 by 3AC. Then comes the stay, around Rs 1,200 for three nights on a dorm bed at goSTOPS Plus Goa Candolim. Together that is around Rs 2,800 for one person, and less per head for a group with the discount, before food, a scooter and the beach. The private room and the flight raise it, and the group discount and the sleeper train lower it.

Rooms, dorms and dates are at goSTOPS Plus Goa Candolim. For the other North Goa bases, start with goSTOPS Goa.
