One night a year, every step of every ghat in Kashi disappears under earthen lamps. Most people searching for Dev Diwali Varanasi want two things: the exact date, and a spot where they can actually see something. Both are easy to get wrong. Visitors book a room two weeks out, turn up at Dashashwamedh at six, and spend the evening wedged in a crowd three hundred metres from the water. Dev Deepawali 2026 is almost entirely a question of timing and position. This guide covers what the festival is, including the Tripurasura legend behind it and why it is called the Diwali of the gods. Then we pin down the date, the Kartik Purnima tithi window and the deep daan timing. After that, we go ghat by ghat through the six best places to watch, from the packed main stage at Dashashwamedh to the quiet new stretch at Namo Ghat. You also get honest numbers on boat prices, the road closures nobody warns you about, and a budget stay near the ghats. Diwali in Varanasi is a quiet indoor night. This one is the exact opposite, and planning it properly is the difference between watching the lamps and fighting the crowd.

What is Dev Deepawali?

Dev Deepawali Varanasi is the city’s festival of lights, held on Kartik Purnima, the full moon closing the month of Kartik. Lakhs of diyas line the riverfront at dusk, from Assi to Raj Ghat.

The Legend of Tripurasura & Kartik Purnima

Three demon brothers won a near-unbreakable boon. Their flying cities could be destroyed only when they aligned, and only by a single arrow. Shiva waited, took the shot, and ended them. That victory gives him the name Tripurari.

Why the Gods Celebrate Diwali in Kashi

Belief holds that the gods then descended to Kashi and lit lamps along the Ganga, which is why this full-moon night, not Diwali in Varanasi a fortnight earlier, is the city’s great riverfront festival. The organised public version is far newer, tracing to the 1980s and early 1990s, with Panchganga and Dashashwamedh both credited as the starting point. If you have seen photos tagged banaras dev diwali 2022, what happens now is several times that scale.

Dev Deepawali 2026 Date & Timings

  • Date: Tuesday, 24 November 2026
  • Kartik Purnima tithi begins: 11:42 PM, Monday 23 November
  • Kartik Purnima tithi ends: 8:23 PM, Tuesday 24 November
  • Sunset in Varanasi: around 5:10 PM
  • Deep daan window: roughly 5:10 PM to 7:55 PM, during pradosh kaal
  • Holy dip: before dawn on the 24th

Tithi times shift by a minute or two between panchangs, so confirm closer to the date. Guru Nanak Jayanti also falls on 24 November, which will add to the crowds.

Best Ghats to Watch Dev Deepawali in Varanasi

Dev Deepawali Varanasi lights roughly 84 ghats. These six are worth choosing between.

Dashashwamedh Ghat

The main stage. The grand Ganga Aarti happens here, performed by 21 priests with dozens of girls carrying lamps. Also the most crowded point on the river.

Assi Ghat

The practical choice. Wide, calmer and far easier to reach from the southern side of the city, so it suits families and anyone who wants to move around. Most boats board here.

Raj Ghat

At the northern end of the lamp-lit stretch, near the bridge. A thinner crowd, and a long view back down the riverfront. Check the traffic notice, because routes around the bridge usually close.

Panchganga Ghat

The historic one. Ahilyabai Holkar’s great stone lamp tower stands here, and tradition holds the lighting begins from this ghat. The approach is a steep climb, so most people view it by boat.

Chet Singh Ghat

The fort facade becomes the canvas for a laser and light-and-sound show staged through the evening. The most produced part of the night, and a strong pick for photographers.

Namo Ghat

The newest and most comfortable option. Redeveloped from Khidkiya Ghat and opened in November 2024, it is broad, modern and far less congested. The trade-off is distance.

How to Experience Dev Deepawali in Varanasi

Boat Ride – Booking & Prices

Every Dev Diwali Varanasi itinerary should start on the water, because a boat is the only way to see the whole riverfront at once. Expect roughly ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 per seat on shared boats, and ₹9,000 upwards on bajras and AC cruises. Rates are operator-set.

Ghat Walk from Assi to Dashashwamedh

If you skip the boat, walk. Start at Assi in the late afternoon and move north as the lamps are lit. It takes an hour and shows you far more of dev deepawali varanasi than standing in one spot.

The Grand Ganga Aarti

The Dashashwamedh aarti is the centrepiece of dev deepawali at varanasi, performed in unison by priests with towering brass lamps, with a mass aarti by dozens of young women alongside.

Light, Laser & Green Fireworks Shows

The city layers modern spectacle on top of the lamps: projection mapping and a laser show at Chet Singh, facade lighting across the riverfront, and green fireworks. The 2026 programme is still being finalised.

Events Around Dev Deepawali

Ganga Mahotsav

A free state-run festival of classical music, dance and crafts running over the days before Kartik Purnima, closing on Dev Deepawali night. The 2026 dates are not yet announced.

Kartik Purnima Holy Dip

Before sunrise on 24 November, the ghats fill with devotees taking the Kartik snan, believed to carry the merit of a whole month’s bathing. Sunrise is around 6:17 AM.

Diwali ( 8 Nov ) & Chhath Puja ( 13 – 16 Nov 2026 )

Diwali in Varanasi falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026, a quiet indoor affair of family puja and rooftop lamps. Chhath Puja follows from 13 to 16 November, when the ghats fill at dawn and dusk. Travelling through varanasi during diwali and staying on for the full moon makes a packed trip.

Dev Deepawali Travel Tips

Book Your Stay & Boat 3 – 4 Weeks in Advance

Three to four weeks is the bare minimum, and riverfront properties go earlier. Rooms near Assi and Godowlia sell out first. Book the boat and the bed together.

Expect Road Closures – Walk to the Ghats

Godowlia to Maidagin becomes a no-vehicle zone, goods vehicles are barred, and a dozen routes get restricted. Parking shuts to new arrivals by mid-afternoon. Plan to walk the last kilometre.

Reach the Ghats by 4 PM

The Dev Diwali Varanasi crowd builds from early afternoon. Be in position by 3 to 4 PM. Carry water and something to sit on.

Keep Valuables Safe & Stay With Your Group

Crowds this dense suit pickpockets. Carry a cross-body bag worn in front, and agree a meeting point, because phone networks buckle under the load.

Stay at goSTOPS Varanasi for a Budget-Friendly Trip

Hotel rates near the ghats roughly double around Kartik Purnima, which is where a hostel bed makes sense. goSTOPS runs a hostel in Varanasi at Bhelupur, on the Assi side. That matters tonight, because Assi is the end of the riverfront you can still reach on foot once closures start. Air-conditioned dorms and private rooms, 24/7 front desk, laundry and solid Wi-Fi.

The front desk books ghat walks and boat experiences, including a sunset boat for the Ganga Aarti, so you are not haggling on the busiest evening of the year. Pair it with our 3-day Varanasi itinerary.

Conclusion

Dev Deepawali rewards boring preparation. Fix the date, book the bed and the boat weeks ahead, pick a ghat that matches your tolerance for crowds, and get into position by four. Do that and dev deepawali varanasi gives you one of the most extraordinary evenings in India.
